Course Description

A practical course for early years staff on managing the weaning stage safely, running calm and well-supervised mealtimes, and recognising and responding to choking with confidence.

Aligned with Aligned with EYFS safeguarding and welfare requirements, Resuscitation Council UK paediatric choking guidance, and Ofsted inspection expectations for safe mealtime practice. and legislation including Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, this course helps learners build confidence, strengthen judgement, and apply safer day-to-day practice.

Key Topics Include:

Explain why the weaning stage carries a genuine choking risk and tell the difference between normal gagging and a real choking emergency.
Apply EYFS requirements for individual dietary plans, allergy records, and supervision ratios during meals and snacks.
Recognise high-risk foods and prepare food, portions, and seating in a way that reduces choking risk for each age group.
Respond to a choking infant or young child using the correct back blow and thrust sequence, then record and report the incident properly.
A toddler begins coughing at snack time and then suddenly goes silent, prompting an urgent staff response.
A new starter's allergy information has not reached the kitchen before their first lunch service.
A baby moving from purees to finger foods gags repeatedly, and a new staff member mistakes it for choking.
A room is short-staffed at lunchtime and mealtime supervision ratios are stretched thin.
