Course Description

A practical course for care and family support staff on recognising domestic abuse in all its forms, having safe conversations, and recording and escalating concerns correctly under UK safeguarding law.

Aligned with Safeguarding / multi-agency practice and legislation including Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and Serious Crime Act 2015 (Section 76), this course helps learners build confidence, strengthen judgement, and apply safer day-to-day practice.

Key Topics Include:

Explain the statutory definition of domestic abuse under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, including the 'personally connected' test.
Recognise the physical, behavioural and environmental indicators of domestic abuse, including coercive and controlling behaviour.
Hold a safe, sensitive conversation with someone you are concerned about, without increasing the danger they face.
Record concerns accurately and escalate them through the correct adult and children's safeguarding routes, including MARAC referral for high-risk cases.
A service user appears anxious when a partner is present and avoids speaking openly.
A child discloses frightening home arguments during a routine support conversation.
Repeated low-level incidents are recorded separately and the wider pattern is not recognised.
A family support worker notices a service user's partner always answers questions on her behalf and controls her phone.
