Course Description

An advanced two-hour course that helps care staff recognise how COPD affects daily life, support safe inhaler and oxygen routines, and respond confidently when a person's breathing gets worse.

Aligned with Aligned with NICE guideline NG115, CQC Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment), and Health and Safety at Work Act duties around oxygen therapy safety. and legislation including Care Act 2014 and NICE guideline NG115: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in over 16s, this course helps learners build confidence, strengthen judgement, and apply safer day-to-day practice.

Key Topics Include:

Explain what COPD is and how breathlessness affects a person's independence, dignity, and daily choices.
Apply NICE guideline NG115 principles around supported self-management, inhaler technique, and pulmonary rehabilitation.
Manage home oxygen therapy safely, including fire risk and flow rates, in line with Health and Safety at Work Act duties.
Recognise the early signs of a COPD flare-up and respond in a way that protects the person and satisfies CQC's safe care expectations.
A resident with known COPD becomes increasingly breathless and anxious partway through the night shift.
A person living at home has started using their reliever inhaler far more often than usual, but nobody has queried why.
A family member turns up an oxygen concentrator's flow rate because their relative 'still seems out of breath'.
A person with COPD stops attending their usual chair exercises after a bad week and starts withdrawing from company.
