Course Description

A specialist course for residential childcare, education and youth-service staff that builds confident recognition of bullying, harassment, and harmful behaviour between children, and a balanced, needs-led response that protects and supports every child involved.

Aligned with Aligned with the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 protection of children standard, its accompanying quality standards guidance, and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023. and legislation including Children Act 1989 and The Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015, this course helps learners build confidence, strengthen judgement, and apply safer day-to-day practice.

Key Topics Include:

Define child-on-child abuse and explain why it must always be treated as a safeguarding matter, never dismissed as ordinary conflict.
Recognise bullying, physical aggression, sexual harassment, harmful sexual behaviour, and online peer abuse across a range of settings.
Understand group and peer dynamics well enough to spot vulnerability and exclusion before harm escalates.
Respond to both the child who has experienced harm and the child displaying harmful behaviour in a way that is protective, proportionate, and needs-led.
Staff notice one young person is consistently left out of shared activities and mealtimes by the peer group.
A group chat between residents is found to contain humiliating comments and images about one young person.
An older resident begins directing sexualised comments at a younger, more vulnerable peer.
A young person who has previously bullied others discloses their own experience of being bullied at a former placement.
