Course Description
A specialist course that builds a clear, practical understanding of attachment theory and its relevance to residential childcare, so that staff can respond to relational behaviour with insight and consistency rather than labels or assumptions.
Aligned with Aligned with the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 standard on children's emotional and behavioural development, the DfE quality standards guidance, and the Care Planning Regulations 2010. and legislation including Children Act 1989 and The Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015, this course helps learners build confidence, strengthen judgement, and apply safer day-to-day practice.
Key Topics Include:
Explain what attachment is and how early relationships shape a child's development.
Recognise secure, insecure, and disorganised attachment patterns without using them as fixed labels.
Understand how separation, loss, and disrupted caregiving connect to attachment-related behaviour.
Support a child's sense of trust and safety through predictable, consistent relationships, without labelling the child.
A child new to a placement flinches away from physical affection and seems suspicious of adults who are consistently kind to them.
A young person tests a new keyworker repeatedly, seemingly waiting for them to give up or reject them.
A child becomes distressed around every transition, from bedtime to a change of staff, in ways that seem out of proportion to the event itself.
A team discusses whether a child's behaviour should be described using an attachment label in a handover, and considers whether that helps or harms.
