Course Description

A core essentials course for agency and temporary residential support workers, covering the role, safeguarding responsibilities, professional boundaries, and the practical procedures needed to work safely and confidently across different children's homes. This course is general preparation and does not replace the home-specific induction every home must still provide.

Aligned with Aligned with the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 requirements for staff suitability and induction, the DfE quality standards guidance, and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023. and legislation including Children Act 1989 and The Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015, this course helps learners build confidence, strengthen judgement, and apply safer day-to-day practice.

Key Topics Include:

Explain the role of a residential childcare worker and the regulatory context agency staff work within.
Understand safeguarding responsibilities, professional boundaries, and confidentiality expectations across different homes.
Follow correct procedures for missing-from-care, medication boundaries, physical intervention limits, and recording and handover.
Explain why home-specific induction is still required, and know how to escalate a concern or uncertainty confidently.
An agency worker arrives for a first shift and is unsure whether they have been briefed on a specific child's risk assessment.
A young person asks an agency worker to keep a secret that raises a safeguarding concern.
An agency worker is asked to administer medication and is unsure whether this falls within their role's boundaries at that particular home.
An agency worker notices something during a shift that feels important but is unsure whether it is their place to raise it, since they are new to the home.
